Washington D.C.
In 2008, I was fortunate enough to procure a reserved ticket to witness the inauguration ceremony of Barak Obama up close and personal. The inauguration set a record attendance for any event ever held in Washington D.C. It was a historic day and we were all beaming with pride; it was also a cluster f@#ck and quite frankly we couldn’t wait to back to our Maryland accommodations by the bay. We never really got to see the city and all of its glory.
This past January (2015) a project I was working on brought me back to Washington D.C. and this time we did it up! My research took me to the Library of Congress and with special passes––the library is closed off to the public––we spent the rest of the week calling it our office and patted ourselves on the back at how cool we were.
We ate and drank our way around the city, hit up every museum on the Mall and walked a total of 50 miles in one weekend. I bought a $40 SmartFare card for the Metro, determined to deplete it, yet ended up with $32 left on it.
Washington D.C. is as beautiful a city as it is diverse. It is easy to get around and we found the people to be really friendly. I will definitely be back for round 3.
